Linking Forestry to Water Quality

Protecting, restoring, and enhancing forests throughout the basin are keys to protecting water quality and maintaining the ecological and socio-economic health of the basin.

The St. Croix River Association has received grant funding from the U.S. Forest Service to partner with the MN Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Forest Resource Council to implement a project linking water quality to sustainable forestry.  Working with additional partners and multiple stakeholders, the project will:

  • Develop a State of the Forest report documenting changes in land cover over time, current forest conditions, tributary conditions and stormwater runoff conditions
  • Develop a Landscape Stewardship Plan to establish desired future conditions and formulate short and long term strategies and actions
  • Install demonstration projects that positively impact water quality
  • Establish a coordinated outreach and education program for both forest landowners and forestry professionals
